More about Edison Park Chicago
Edison Park is a charming Chicago neighborhood with an almost “small‑town in the city” vibe, tree‑lined streets, and homes showcasing classic architectural styles.
Historical Roots & Naming of Edison Park, IL
Founded in 1834 by the Ebinger family—Christian Sr., Christian Jr., and their siblings—the settlement began unexpectedly. While traveling toward Milwaukee Avenue, the family stopped when their horse died from a snake bite. They chose to settle in the area, then known as “Dutchman’s Point.” Christian Jr. was the first white child born there, a notable moment in its early history. WikipediaChicago History Encyclopedia.
Originally established as the villages of Canfield and Ridgelawn, the area became an official village in 1896. It was renamed Edison Park in 1890 to highlight its early use of electricity, reportedly endorsed by Thomas Edison—though this claim is uncertain. Chicago History EncyclopediaChicago Sun-Times.
In 1910, residents voted to join Chicago, giving local students access to Carl Schurz High School by rail. This decision made Edison Park part of the city. Chicago History EncyclopediaChicago Sun-Times.
